Brown’s Candy store at Silver Dollar City makes many different types of candy. They are known for their delicious fudge and brittle.

If you have never tried Fool’s Gold candy, it is a nut brittle candy minus the nuts.

You can make this candy at home with a few simple ingredients. You will need dark corn syrup, sugar, baking soda, and chocolate.

How to Make Fool’s Gold Candy

You will need to bring the corn syrup and sugar to boil. Cook until it reaches 306 degrees, you need to measure the temperature with a candy thermometer. When the candy reaches the right temperature you will need to add the baking soda and stir very quickly.

Quickly pour the hot candy on a baking sheet and spread out with a wooden spoon or a heat-safe spatula.

When the candy cools you will need to break up the candy into small pieces. You can enjoy the fool’s gold candy plain like this or you can dip it into chocolate.

If desired you can dip fool’s gold into chocolate. You can use chocolate bark or your favorite chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dark corn syrup
  • 4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 pound chocolate for dipping

Instructions

  • Over medium heat. In a very large and heavy saucepan combine sugar and syrup. Bring to a boil just until sugar dissolves. Stirring constantly. Cook without stirring until it reaches hard crack stage or 305 degrees on candy thermometer, remove from heat, stir in soda. 
  • Working quickly, spread mixture in a 9x18" pan. Allow to cool. Break into pieces. Dip in Chocolate that has been melted if desired. Let the Chocolate harden. Enjoy. This is good with or without the chocolate. DO NOT try to make this on a cloudy day. It will not work.

      Are you sure you used teaspoons of baking soda and not tablespoons? I have never had it taste salty. We make this every year for the holidays.
