Bacon Wrapped Green Bean Bundles

Bacon Wrapped Green Bean Bundles are my new favorite party food and special holiday recipe! What makes this recipe special? Bacon. While bacon can make almost anything special, when you add some brown sugar it will send you to a new level.

Green Beans Wrapped With Bacon

Crispy bacon wrapped tender young green beans with a sweet, buttery, tangy sauce that is drizzled over while they cook.

I swear, I think these should be my newest party food. I love these as a party food. What I like about this recipe is that you don’t have to be exact in the measurements, so go with what you have.

Do you want to serve an appetizer or side dish that is guaranteed to impress your guests? Then this recipe is for you. Although elegant in presentation and utterly addictive, these green bean bundles are a snap to make.

You can even prepare these beauties beforehand, so you have less to do on the day of your big event. Paired with a sweet, savory sauce, bacon wrapped green beans are difficult to beat. Even veggie ‘haters’ will find themselves reaching for another bundle.

Picking the Perfect Green Beans

When selecting green beans for this recipe, it is well worth being choosy.

Ideally, you want to use French beans because they tend to be thinner, shorter, and a bit more tender than other types of green beans. Some stores may try to profit off the “French-ness” of these beans by selling them as “Haricots verts,” which, by the way, just means “green beans” in French. French green beans are often a little more expensive, but any garden-fresh, skinny green beans will do in a pinch. For the best selection, try your local farmer’s market or an upscale grocery store.

Preparing Green Beans for Bundles

No matter which kind of green beans you buy, you need to prepare them correctly. First, give your green beans a good rinse and quickly dry them off. Pick up a green bean and find the stem end. This is where it is picked from the plant. Now grasp the stem end between your fingers and gently pull down towards the other end, removing the ‘string.’ Repeat until you remove all the strings.

To save a little time before preparing the green bean bundles, put a big covered pot of lightly salted water over high heat to boil and make an ice bath. An ice bath is a large mixing bowl a quarter of the way filled with ice and covered with cold water.

After removing all the strings from the green beans, it is time to start blanching. Make sure the water is boiling rapidly, and add the green beans to the pot carefully. Depending on your pot’s size and how many green beans you want to blanch, you may need to work in batches.

Try not to overcrowd the green beans as they blanch. After around 3 minutes, you should notice the green beans turning dark green. Take them out using tongs and immediately plunge them into the ice bath to stop them from cooking.

Remove from the ice bath and pat dry. Now you are ready to proceed with making green bean bundles.

How to Make Green Bean Bundles

  1. Wash green beans and carefully lay them on a paper towel.
  2. Microwave the green beans on the paper towel for about 90 seconds.
  3. In a large skillet, sauté bacon until it is almost done. Undercook the bacon because it will finish cooking in the oven.
  4. In a small saucepan or skillet, combine butter, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Cook and stir until the butter and brown sugar have melted and blended.

  2. Secure bacon with a toothpick and place bundles into a 9 X 13-inch baking dish. Repeat until you run out of green beans or bacon.
  3. Drizzle seasoned butter over each green bean bundle.
  4. Bake green bean bundles at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the bacon is crisp. Browning of the bacon should take from 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Drizzle the remaining sauce over the bacon bundles before serving.

Tips For Making Bacon Wrapped Green Beans

  • Use the same length of green beans for each bundle. This gives each of them a uniform look. It is alright if different bundles are slightly longer or shorter.
  • Thin-cut, lean bacon is best for this recipe. Save the thick-cut and streaky bacon for breakfast, but maple, honey, and brown sugar-flavored varieties add a unique taste.
  • You can make the bundles ahead of time. One day covered tightly in the fridge isn’t going to make much of a difference. Just hold off on baking the bundles until you plan to serve them.

I’ve been making this for years, using fresh asparagus instead of green beans. I could live on it!! It makes a beautiful presentation for a fancy dinner or just week night munchies!

I have made a similar recipe for years but baste the bundled beans with sweet BBQ sauce. You wouldn’t eat those vegetables?
