We are in the thick of the holiday season. I have been baking and cooking up a storm here. I have been coming across a lot of new items in the store that I have been using in my cooking.
This is a month where I get to do a lot of cooking for others. For once in blue moon I picked up a couple of cookbooks that I really have liked.
The Slanted Door
If you live in San Francisco you may have heard of the restaurant called the Slanted Door. This restaurant serves up some delicious modern Vietnamese cooking. The last two times I have been in San Francisco I have had the pleasure of dining here. Charles Phan the chef of this restaurant has put together an amazing cookbook. The recipes are inspirational and breath taking. I love that some are more rustic and some are more complex. I think this is a great way to experience Vietnamese home cooking.

The America's Test Kitchen Cooking School Cookbook: Everything You Need to Know to Become a Great Cook – are you ever looking for a book that will help you tackle the basics? I have enjoyed this book completely. Often when I am trying to “Copy Cat” a recipe I look up several basic recipes, and them modify and test and do it again and again until I am happy with my results. I think this book does a great job on basic recipes, and it has a lot of pictures, so it is very helpful.

Perhaps you are baking a lot right now. I am have been using a lot of King Arthur Flour, I like the heft that it gives to baked goods. You can find this in most grocery stores, and you can purchase it online. I am always happy with the results of this flour. It is treated differently and prepared differently than many other types of flour you will find in your grocery store. Sure, it costs just a little bit more, but I think you will enjoy the results from this flour.
Costco is one of my favorite stores, no seriously, it is my favorite store. They are selling a nice twin pack of parchment paper that is priced reasonably. I like to use parchment paper to make cookies. It often means less clean up for me. If you want to get fancy you can cook fish in it.
I also adore Costco vanilla. It is priced right, and when compared to other more expensive vanilla I find the results to be quite good. You can purchase 16 ounces of pure vanilla extract for less than 10 dollars. I have paid for more for vanilla without better results.
Other Fun Stuff
I belong to a social group of women. Sometimes we play bunco, sometimes we play other fun games. We recently spent an evening playing Cards Against Humanity, so this is a game for adults. This isn't for the faint of heart, or anyone under the age of 18. It almost forces you to say bad things. This game is a whole lot of fun. This is a great game to liven up an adult party.
That's about all for this month. Stay tuned.
