Another month has gone by blazingly fast. Thankfully here in Texas, I believe Spring has arrived. So let’s get started on what are some of my favorite things for March.
This last month I had the pleasure of going to the farms for Tasteful Selections potatoes. If you have been following my blog, you know that I really enjoy using these potatoes. So often when it comes to large agriculture we have the wrong idea. We think that the farmers may not care what they plant, what they do to the environment, and they are only concerned for their financial gain. I met the people who own the farm, went through the processing facility, and I thought it was an amazing experience. If you have never tried these potatoes, they are perfectly sized and come pre-washed. So you just need to open the bag and start dinner.
I have used these potatoes in many recipes, here are just a few of them.
Adventures in the 99 Cent Stores
My mind has been on produce this month. Actually, I have been totally loving Aldi and the 99 Cent Stores. I don’t always go into the 99 Cent Stores, but when I do, I head straight back to the produce section. Why? Cauliflower is just 99 cents, I can get red and orange bell peppers 2 for 99 cents. Where else can I get produce these cheap? I have no idea. If you have a 99 Cent Store near you, I would encourage for you to go in and give their produce bin a try, I am certain you are going to love something in there, and you can’t beat 99 cents.
Produce Finds at Aldi
So, Aldi is so becoming one of my favorite grocery stores. Yes, it’s all their brand, but their brand is good. This last Sunday I picked up asparagus at 1.49 a 2 pounds of asparagus. Seriously, what is going on there? At my stores’ fresh pineapple is just 99 cents at Aldi. Oh yes, I totally dig their crackers. I love to serve up cheese and crackers when I have folks over, now I can do for less.
Co op Recommendation
One last item when it comes to produce, I don’t know if you are lucky enough to have a Bountiful Basket Co-op site near you. This is a co-op you can join. They put together a bunch of fresh produce, organic or conventional baskets that are overflowing with food that is sourced closed to your home. For a very reasonable price. I love that you don’t have to buy this one every week, but you have to get your order in and pick it up. Great find, I have ordered from them several times, and I love the great value and variety you can get from them.
What I am reading
So when I am not busy looking for produce, I am in the kitchen cooking many things up. I have been on a huge Julia Child kick lately. I have been watching many of her old TV shows on Youtube, and I have purchased a few of her books used from Amazon.com. One that I didn’t realize was so good was From Julia Child’s Kitchen. Some reviewers on Amazon.com say it was her best book, as many of her recipes are French influenced but tailored for an American audience. Yes, you will get a used book, chances are it will cost you less than 5 dollars including shipping. She gives so much information with each recipe, I know you will love this book.
Other Good Stuff
Ok, so completely not food related but something I am loving right now. I love a good leather purse. They just last for a long time. I have a couple of items from Saddletack, their slogan is that “They will fight over it when you are dead”, and with a slogan like that, you know these folks care about what they make, and they have a sense of humor. I wanted to clean up a wallet I have used faithfully for a year now, and it came out looking brand new with the Chamberlain’s Leather Milk 8oz Leather Care Liniment No. 1: Best Cleaner and Conditioner for Quality Leather.
That’s it that I can think of for right now. Stay tuned for next month.
