  3. Remove the vegetables from the skillet once the potatoes are tender.

Recipe Variations

  • Add eggs. Eggs are the perfect addition to this dish, especially scrambled eggs! However, topping the hash with fried eggs is equally delicious and works no matter what time of day you plan to eat it.
  • Get creative with mix-ins. This is the ultimate recipe for customization. Try adding more veggies, such as corn, spinach, carrots, celery, tomatoes, or jalapenos. Or add bacon to make it extra hearty!
  • Swap the diced potatoes for shredded hash browns. You can use fresh or frozen hash browns. Just make sure to thoroughly cook the frozen ones before removing them from the heat and adding in the sausage.
  • Add garnishes when you serve it. Sprinkle the hash with ingredients like shredded cheese, avocado slices, a dash of hot sauce, salsa, or feta cheese crumbles. The options are endless.

What to Serve with This Dish

This recipe can function as an entire meal since it has plenty of protein and veggies. However, you can always serve it with side dishes. Whether you plan to make this for breakfast, brunch, or dinner, this is an adaptable meal that works with all sorts of accompaniments.

For instance, serve it with a slice of toast, fresh fruit, or a yummy parfait. You can also make it heartier by serving it with homemade gravy and a fried egg on top, as well as warm biscuits or dinner rolls, which pair well with the sausage and other components.

How to Store This Dish

Once the breakfast sausage hash entirely cools, transfer it to a container with a fitting lid, which helps keep it fresh for longer. This hash will last 3 to 5 days when properly storing it in the refrigerator!

What is The Best Way to Reheat Sausage Hash Brown Skillet?

I like reheating this dish on the stovetop because the ingredients have an excellent texture with this method. Use medium heat and occasionally stir it to heat it evenly. You can also microwave it if you’re in a rush! Cover it with a paper towel and mix it in between cooking spurts.

A recipe with the same ingredients (except green peppers) was published about 45 years ago in Sunset magazine; It was, and is, delicious; I’ve used Hillshire Farm turkey kielbasa in it. The Sunset recipe added a few splashes of Worcestershire sauce just before adding eggs in to be scrambled with the potatoes and sausage. The Worcestershire sauce really kicks it up! A great one-skillet dish.

I can see where this would be even better with Worchestershire sauce! I never say the Sunset magazine, my mom had a few of their cookbooks I used to read them when I was growing up.

WE ATE AT RED LOBSTER RECENTLY. THEY SERVED A DIP WITH ARTICHOKES, CHEESE AND SPINACH. IT WAS TO DIE FOR. CAN YOU GET THE RECIPE? THANKS MUCH IN ADVANCE.

Yummy! This looks so delicious. I use Hillshire Farms sausages in a few of my recipes. I’ll have to try it in hash. Thanks for the idea.

  5. Jeannie

This sounds really good! I don’t like onion or green pepper..cooked..(love them raw), so I think I’m going to try this with just some onion powder and then top each serving with a fried egg.

  6. Norm

In a large skillet add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, diced white onion, chopped bell pepper, and diced potatoes.

Replace first line in the instructions with the above and the recipe will be in agreement with the ingredients list.
