And you still want a baked potato. I promise you, you can make your baked potato and enjoy your favorite toppings.

Why this crockpot potatoes recipe will become your go-to baked potatoes recipe.

  • Simple ingredients – this recipe contains potatoes, salt, and a touch of olive oil.
  • No fuss! – This recipe is hands-off, you will literally place the potatoes in the bottom of the crockpot and you can walk away until they are done.
  • Mistake proof! – This takes no time at all to put together, and you are going to place the potatoes into the crock pot, and the cooking process couldn’t be simpler.

What type of potatoes can you bake in your slow cooker?

You can make any type of potato you want. This is an easy and delicious recipe for cooking potatoes. I recommend the following potatoes:

  • Russet potatoes – these are the classic potatoes we all know and love. They have soft fluffy insides and will cook up with crispy potato skins.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes – this is a starchy potato, they have fluffy insides, but the meat of the potato has a wonderful buttery flavor.
  • Sweet potatoes – yes, you can make these in your crockpot, these are great for the fall when you top them with butter and brown sugar.

What size of potatoes to use in a crockpot?

We all know you can get potatoes in tiny bite-sized chunks or you can get them all sizes, up to ones that are as big as a football. When I bake potatoes in the slow cooker I like to use a smaller potato. I like to use potatoes that are about 6 ounces. Those are about as long as your palm is wide.

I have even been known to weigh the potatoes to make sure they weigh close to each other. I like to cook them when they are about 6 to 8 ounces.

Do you need to add water?

You do not need to add water to your crockpot potatoes The potatoes will cook up just fine without any water.

Can you double the recipe?

Yes, you can, you can bake as many as you need. It’s a great idea to bake up several potatoes at once.

How do you cook the potatoes?

It couldn’t be easier to cook potatoes. This method is the perfect way to cook potatoes for either meal prep, if you want to make a great side dish, or if you want to load up your potatoes to make them the main course.

  • Wash the potatoes well and pat them dry.
  • Drizzle a bit of olive oil or vegetable oil over the potatoes, be sure to cover spread oil over the sides of each potato.
  • Sprinkle salt over the potatoes.
  • Place the potatoes in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  • Let the potatoes cook, you can choose to cook them on high or low.
Do I need to wrap these potatoes in aluminum foil before placing them in a crock pot?

No, it is not necessary. In fact, the skins will crisp up more if you do not wrap them in foil.

Do I need to prick the potatoes with a fork before cooking?

No, it is not necessary. Potatoes can explode if you overcook them, but this is a fool-proof method. To get potatoes that are fluffy on the inside, don’t poke them, that will release the moisture and make the potato dry on the inside.

How long to cook potatoes in the slow cooker?

When using the slow cooker, you have two options. You can cook the potatoes on high, or you can cook them on low.

On High – 4 to 4 1/2 hours

On Low – 6 to 6 1/2 hours

It will take some time to cook your potatoes, but all food takes a while in your slow cooker. It is best to plan ahead when cooking these in the slow cooker. I hope you give this a try soon!

    Hi Stephanie,

Over the years, Im sure you have perfected plenty of copykat recipes. Would you mind sharing a few of your least favorite copykat attempts? This is obviously just for fun. And if you dont mind, could you explain what went wrong? Thanks so much and Happy New Year!

If you use the instant pot as the slow cooker I would cook it for the same amount of time. I have never cooked whole potatoes in the instant pot. As potatoes explode when they are overcooked, I would be a little intimated in trying to “bake” potatoes under pressure.

Ive cook potatoes in the Instant pot numerous times. They are excellant .. usually 15 minutes on rack with one cup Water. Course cooking time depends on the size of the potatoe.

I’m guessing that cooking in the slow cooker gives you a bit of a crispy skin. If so, wouldn’t the water required by the Instant Pot kind of defeat the purpose. Faster but no crispy outsides???

In a 6qt slow cooker can I do more than 4 potatoes? Also, I have a smaller slow cooker I believe 3qt do you think for only 2 potatoes that one would be a good size or do I need to use the larger one? Thanks

You can add several potatoes to the slow cooker. You can be pretty flexible, in the number of potatoes that you put in there. The cooking time/technique does not change.
