Spicy Apple Bread

You can make a wonderful spiced apple bread with fresh apples.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoons nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoons cloves
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar firmly packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup coarsely grated raw apple about 2 medium apples
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 
  • Sift together first seven ingredients; set aside.  In mixing bowl combine shortening, sugar, and eggs beat well.  Stir in apple and about half of the sifted dry ingredients.  Add buttermilk and blend.  
  • Add rest of flour mixture and stir just until well mixed. Blend in nuts. Pout into greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes, or until done when tested. Cool on rack.
