In a 1½ pint jar, layer the eight dry soup mix ingredients in the order listed. Seal tightly.
Soup
Carefully remove macaroni from the top of the jar and set it aside.
In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, brown beef. Drain off the grease and return the beef to the pan.
Add the water, tomatoes, and soup mix. Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat, cover the pan, and simmer for 45 minutes.
Add the reserved macaroni. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until the macaroni, peas, lentils, and barley are tender.
Recipe Tips
Do not place the bouillon granules at the bottom of the jar. They will draw moisture from the split peas below and can solidify into a hard mass that's difficult to separate from the glass. If your split peas don't soften fully during the 45-minute simmer, you have two options: extend the simmer time by 10 to 15 minutes with the lid on, or pre-cook the split peas separately before assembling the jar. Some varieties of split peas are denser than others and need more time. When gifting, print or handwrite the soup cooking instructions on a card and tie it directly to the jar. The recipient shouldn't have to look up how to make it.For the best-looking layers, work slowly and tap the jar firmly between each addition. Rushing causes the layers to blend at the edges.
