Labor Day is one of my favorite weekends of the year. It may seem like we are holiday deprived during the summer. School starts soon, and for me this has been a great way mark the end of summer, and begin the fall season. I love to catch up with friends, and for me, that means cooking up lots of great copycat recipes. You don’t have to go out for dinner this weekend, you can make many of your restaurant recipes at home.

This last weekend I had the pleasure of celebrating a friend’s 40th birthday. At his party, his mom, Becky made these delicious stuffed jalapeno poppers. These were simple and elegant, and so delicious. I never thought of putting together goat cheese and pickled jalapeno peppers together, but now that I have tried this, this dish will be making future appearances at my house.

Grand Lux Cafe Buffalo Spring Rolls are a wonderful treat, they combine the wonderful buffalo chicken flavor into a crispy springroll. These are served blue cheese salad dressing, and celery sticks. This has been one of my favorite finds recently, in dining out. The Grand Lux Cafe restaurant makes all sorts of delightful appetizers and this one is no exception.

Fresh Herb Green Beans are a wonderful treat during the summer. The summer always brings me back to childhood and having fresh produce out of the gardens. Growing up both my grandparents and my parents all had gardens. For some reason Green Beans seemed for us, to be the one crop that would always product abundantly. Normally serving green beans meant serving them cook up with bacon and onions, but recently, I came across a recipe that had a little more sophistication. If you are like me, green beans often come out of a can, or sometimes even frozen, I would urge you to pick up some fresh green beans during the summer, when they are just picked at the farm, you are going to really enjoy the difference in flavor.

A friend of mine sent me a link to this sandwich, I didn’t believe Denny’s Fried Cheese Melt really existed. I thought the Denny’s Fried Cheese Melt was a joke. It’s not, my friends, it is not a joke. Now, first let me say, this isn’t something that we should eat everyday, or even once in awhile, we should eat this once in a great awhile. What is this you ask? This is essentially a Grilled Cheese on Sourdough bread, with the addition of 4 deep fried cheese sticks served with a side of marina sauce. Have they pushed our desires for cheesy goodness to far?

CoCos is a wonderful coffee shop in Houston’s Midtown area. I love independent coffee shops, here they serve up coffee, homemade desserts, and all sorts of crepes. This was one of my favorite desserts they have served. Nutella is a wonderful creation, and you have to love in their commercials they try to sell the benefits of eating healthier because of Nutella. While I am not going to make any profession that this dish is healthy, I will tell you it is delicious, and simple.

Homemade Pesto isn’t difficult to make. Pesto is served in many restaurants, and is often one of the most popular sauces served in a restaurant. Now, you don’t have to buy expensive pesto sauce, you can make pesto at home, it is easy to do, and it tastes so much better than pesto sauce that you can purchase. I feel upon this recipe by accident, many pesto sauces use extra virgin olive oil, but the night I made this dish, I ran out, and I was in a bind with company on the way. So I prepared this pesto was made with less expensive vegetable oil.

Jezebel sauce is one of those perfect party foods, I actually discovered this recipe at a party years ago. I finally got around to making Jezebel sauce, this is one of those sauces that when poured over cream cheese, you have a dish that is ready for a party. What makes this Southern dish special is you can make this spicy and sweet sauce ahead of time, when you make this you will have plenty to put in a pretty jar and bring some to a party.

Denny’s Moons Over Hammy is a hearty breakfast sandwich that is a popular menu item at Denny’s. This hearty sandwhich features grilled ham, two different types of cheese and sourdough bread, what could be better. I hate to say how many times I have ordered this sandwich at Denny’s. I love this hearty sandwich, and I really hate a full parking lot. On the weekends I have been known to make this copycat restaurant recipe at home.

I have had braised beef short ribs in many fine restaurants over the years. Yet, it was a dish that I never made, why? I don’t know. I served this at a recent dinner party, and they were fantastic. My braised beef short ribs were simple to make and tasted like much more effort was put into them. These beef short ribs were so tender that no one needed a knife to cut them. Best of all I fed over 8 people for very little money, beef short ribs are a bargin at the butcher.
