Buckeye Dip
Traditional Buckeye candy is a beloved classic, but rolling and dipping each individual peanut butter ball takes real time and patience. This Buckeye Dip delivers all the same rich peanut butter and chocolate flavor in a smooth, creamy dip that comes together in about 10 minutes of active prep. Cream cheese, Cool Whip, and creamy peanut butter combine into a thick, fluffy base finished with mini chocolate chips throughout. It is the perfect make-ahead dessert dip for game day, holiday parties, or keeping a bowl in the fridge for whenever a craving hits.

Why is Buckeye Dip with Cool Whip the perfect dip for peanut butter lovers?
The combination of cream cheese and Cool Whip is what gives this dip its signature texture. Cream cheese provides a dense, tangy base with enough structure to hold the dip together, while the whipped topping adds air and lightens the mixture into something fluffy rather than heavy. Powdered sugar dissolves completely without any gritty texture that granulated sugar would leave behind. The mini chocolate chips stay suspended throughout the dip rather than sinking, which means you get chocolate in every bite rather than just at the bottom of the bowl. Chilling before serving gives all the components time to firm up slightly and meld into a cohesive dip rather than tasting like separate ingredients.
Buckeye Dip ingredients
For this Buckeye Dip recipe with cream cheese, you’ll need:
- Cream cheese – Provides the rich, dense, tangy base that gives the dip its structure and body
- Powdered sugar – Sweetens the dip and dissolves completely for a smooth, grit-free texture
- Creamy peanut butter – Delivers the classic Buckeye flavor and adds richness throughout
- Vanilla extract – Rounds out the sweetness and adds warmth that ties all the flavors together
- Cool Whip or whipped topping, thawed – Folds in lightness and a fluffy texture that keeps the dip from feeling too heavy
- Mini chocolate chips – Distributed throughout and on top for pops of chocolate flavor in every bite

How to make Buckeye Dip with Cool Whip
To prepare the dip:
- Take the cream cheese out of the fridge for at least 10 minutes before starting the recipe to give it enough time to soften.
- Put the cream cheese and creamy peanut butter in a large bowl and mix until smooth. Use a stand or electric hand mixer with a paddle attachment to make it easier.
- Sift the powdered sugar into the bowl and mix it on a low setting until fully incorporated. To prevent the powdered sugar from flying everywhere, you can add it in batches.
- Fold in the Cool Whip and all but about a tablespoon of mini chocolate chips.

- Spoon the dip into a serving bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Chill the dip in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
- Top with the remaining mini chocolate chips and serve with a selection of dunkers. See below for a few suggestions.

Recipe variations
Mocha Buckeye Dip. Coffee lovers will appreciate the subtle espresso flavors in this variation. Add a teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the dip.
Chocolate Hazelnut Buckeye Dip. Swap the peanut butter for Nutella and skip the powdered sugar for a sweet and nutty riff on the original.
Peanut Buttercup Buckeye Dip. Freeze the peanut butter cups and break them into small pieces. Swap the broken peanut butter cups for the chocolate chips in the recipe above.Â
What to dunk into this dip
You have a lot of options for dunking with this Buckeye Dip. It’s creamy enough to dip graham crackers without them breaking, but crisp apple slices add a slight tartness to help balance the sweetness.
Nilla Wafers, chocolate chip cookies, or chocolate graham crackers would be delicious dunkers. Try dipping a pretzel rod into the dip for a sweet-and-salty treat.
How to store the leftover dip
Stay safe by throwing away the dip that you have already served, but you can keep the unsevered dip right in the serving bowl. Cover the top of the dip with plastic wrap and stick it in the fridge.
How long does the dip last?
You can keep this Buckeye Dip recipe with cream cheese covered in the fridge for up to five days, but it will be better the sooner you eat it.
