Nostalgic School Cafeteria Pizza Burgers: Easy Family Dinner Recipe

By Stephanie Manley Updated 04/23/25

The first time I bit into a pizza burger in my elementary school cafeteria, I knew this wasn’t just another lunch. That magical combination of savory meat sauce, melted cheese, and toasted bread transported me to flavor paradise. Every Friday, I’d hope to see these on the menu. Now as an adult, I’ve perfected my version that brings back those childhood memories while being substantial enough for a family dinner. The best part? My kids love customizing their own just as much as I loved eating them back then!

Pizza Burgers Recipe Ingredients

Here’s a list of what you need:

  • Italian Sausage – Provides rich, aromatic flavor with notes of fennel and herbs that give these burgers their distinctive pizza-like taste
  • Ground Beef – Creates the hearty base and traditional burger texture while balancing the stronger flavors of the Italian sausage
  • Tomato Sauce – Acts as the binding agent for the meat mixture while delivering classic pizza sauce flavor and moisture
  • Canned Sliced Mushrooms – Adds an earthy umami flavor and meaty texture that complements the beef and sausage
  • Dried Oregano – Contributes the quintessential Italian herb flavor that makes these taste authentically like pizza
  • Garlic Salt – Infuses the meat mixture with garlicky flavor and proper seasoning in one convenient ingredient
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese – Creates that perfect melty, stretchy pizza-like cheese pull while adding creamy richness
  • Hamburger Buns – Serve as the pizza “crust” foundation, providing structure and a slightly sweet complement to the savory topping

The Perfect Pizza Burger Base Options

Pizza burgers are traditionally made with hamburger buns, but you have several options for your “crust”:

  • Kaiser or Hoagie Rolls – More substantial than burger buns and less likely to get soggy
  • English Muffins – Provide a sturdy base with nooks and crannies that catch the sauce beautifully
  • Thick Sliced Sourdough – Offers a tangy flavor that complements the savory meat mixture
  • Sweet Hawaiian Rolls – Create an interesting sweet-savory contrast (be sure to toast them first)
  • Garlic Bread – For an extra flavor boost that complements the Italian ingredients

Creative Topping Combinations

Beyond the basic recipe, try these tasty variations:

  • Classic Pepperoni – Add sliced pepperoni under the cheese before baking
  • Veggie Supreme – Top with diced bell peppers, onions, and olives
  • Balsamic Caramelized Onion & Gruyere – Substitute Gruyere cheese and add pre-cooked caramelized onions
  • Mac & Cheese – Spread a layer of prepared mac and cheese over the meat for a kid-friendly option
  • Spicy Jalapeño – Add sliced jalapeños and substitute cheddar cheese for a kick

Storage and Reheating Instructions

  • Refrigeration – Store leftover meat mixture separately from buns in airtight containers for up to 3 days
  • Freezing – The meat mixture freezes well for up to 1 month in freezer-safe containers
  • Reheating – Warm meat mixture in a microwave or on stovetop before assembling fresh pizza burgers
