Colorful Tropical Cocktail

You may not be able to jet off to Mauna Kea Beach on the Big Island, but sipping a cool, Blue Hawaiian cocktail will help you get into the holiday mindset wherever you happen to be.

This Tiki-inspired drink will liven up any get-together with its striking color and fruity taste. Mix up a few of these cocktails and break out the tiki torches, and you can bring tropical paradise to you.

What is a Blue Hawaiian drink?

The Blue Hawaiian recipe is built on coconut-flavored rum and pineapple juice with sour mix and a splash of blue curaçao for color. It is a fun, easy-to-drink cocktail that demands a paper parasol and a pineapple wedge garnish.

Although it is easy to do, you shouldn’t confuse the Olive Garden Blue Hawaiian punch recipe with the Blue Hawaii cocktail. Although they have almost the same name, the Blue Hawaii cocktail ingredients differ slightly by using equal parts vodka and unflavored light rum.

What’s in the Blue Hawaiian Punch recipe

This recipe is pretty straightforward without too many unfamiliar ingredients. To make an Olive Garden Blue Hawaiian, you will need:

  • Malibu Rum, the sorority staple, is made from rum with a coconut and other tropical flavors. While technically not a rum because of its low alcohol content, this super sweet liqueur is the one bartenders reach for to make many fruity cocktails. As an alternative, you can use any coconut-flavored rum-like BACARDI Coconut or Largo Bay Coconut Rum.
  • Blue Curaçao is a citrus-flavored liqueur that has a bitter-sweet flavor similar to Triple Sec. It’s part of this drink primarily for the strikingly blue color it gives the cocktail and its ability to play off the tartness from the sour mix. Since there’s only 3/4 of an ounce in the recipe, there is no need to pay for a premium brand. Mr. Stacks or even the alcohol-free Fee Brothers Blue Curaçao Syrup is fine.
  • Sour Mix adds just the right amount of tartness to the cocktail to help balance out all that sugar from Malibu and the juice. You can use your favorite brand of sour mix or try making it yourself. To make a sour mix, combine two parts of simple syrup with two parts of fresh lemon juice and one part of fresh lime juice. Stir well to combine.
  • Pineapple juice brings the tropics and a good bit of sweetness to this cocktail. Use 100 percent fruit juice without the pulp.

Other ingredients are ice and garnishes such as a cherry or pineapple slice.

Tips for Making an Olive Garden Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

  • Give it a good shake. Since this drink contains fruit juice, you need to shake it for about ten seconds before pouring it into a hurricane glass. If you don’t have a hurricane glass, any narrow, tall glass will do.
  • Tamp down the tartness. Give the drink a thicker, creamier consistency by replacing half of the sour mix with cream of coconut or coconut milk.
  • Turn it into a frozen Blue Hawaiian. Add all the ingredients and a couple of ice cubes to a blender and pulse it a few times for a drink that is guaranteed to cool you off on even the hottest days.
