Why This Recipe Works
The genius of this garlic burger lies in its layered approach to flavor. Instead of relying on just one source of garlic, this recipe builds complexity through garlic salt in the seasoning blend, fresh garlic in the butter sauce, and garlic-brushed buns. The double-patty construction maximizes the prized seared surface area while ensuring faster, more even cooking. The generous garlic butter keeps everything moist and creates an irresistible aroma that will have neighbors asking what smells so incredible.
Ingredients
For the Burger Patties:
- Ground beef chuck (80/20) – Provides the perfect fat content for juicy, flavorful patties that hold together beautifully
- Salt – Enhances the natural beef flavor and helps develop the savory crust
- Ground black pepper – Adds warmth and subtle heat that complements the garlic
- Onion salt – Contributes savory depth and aromatic complexity
- Garlic salt – Delivers the primary garlic punch and seasons the meat throughout
For the Garlic Butter Sauce:
- Butter – Creates the rich, luxurious base that carries garlic flavor to every component
- Fresh garlic – Provides intense, aromatic garlic flavor that permeates the entire burger
For Assembly:
- American cheese – Melts perfectly and provides creamy richness that balances the bold garlic
- Hamburger buns – Serves as the foundation that holds all the delicious components together

Cooking Garlic Burgers to Perfection
Do you prefer a juicy, medium-rare burger, or would you like yours a bit more well-done? Learning to cook burgers to the correct temperature isn’t as difficult as you think.
Of course, the fool-proof method uses a thermometer, but these thin patties make it challenging to get an accurate reading. Besides, there are easier ways that can help even novice cooks look like pros.
- Start with room-temperature beef.
- Use a thick-bottom, cast-iron griddle or pan. Heat the cooking surface to medium-high heat. Lightly coat the surface with a cooking spray.
- Unless you have a large griddle, you’ll have to cook in batches. Place the balls of ground beef four inches away from each other and the sides to allow plenty of room to flatten into patties.
- Cook until you start to see liquid on the surface of the meat and the bottom begins to turn brown.
- If you want a medium burger, flip when you first see the juices appear, but wait until the liquid is clear before turning the patty over if you like well-done burgers.
- Once you flip the patty, brush it with a generous amount of the garlic burger sauce, and top with a slice of cheese. Once the cheese is melted and the bottom is browned, set the burger aside to rest.
If you insist on using a thermometer, ensure you do it correctly. Don’t take the temperature of the burger from the top. Instead, insert the thermometer from the side until the tip reaches the center of the patty.
- Medium-rare 130 degrees
- Medium 140 degrees
- Medium-well 150 degrees
- Well-done 160 degrees
Remove the burger from the heat when the temperature reaches five degrees below the desired temperature. Doing this allows for carryover cooking.
Undercooked burgers pose a health risk, and the USDA guidelines recommend cooking ground beef to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit before eating.
Tips for Serving Garlic Burgers
- Get the best buns you can. These burgers deserve great rolls. So, skip those cheapies that tear easily and opt for something a lot heartier instead. Kaiser rolls are perfect, but any good-quality bun will do.
- Keep your add-ons to a minimum. This burger is so flavorful on its own; going overboard on extra sauces and toppings is only going to prevent all that garlicky goodness from coming through. If you have to add something, stick to basics like lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.

I love burgers and garlic, but this burger doesn’t look done. I have to have mine well done. This… I could not eat. There is possible chance of getting sick eating undone hamburger meat.
I prefer mine a bit pink, I know this is not everyone’s preference, but that is the great thing about cooking at home, you get to prepare your food the way want.
I can’t wait until I have the right meat for Beef jerky!!! And, Stephanie, do you ever make Bob’s Big Boy Blue Cheese salad dressing? Ever since we moved to New Zealand (6.5 years ago) I have missed that nice mild flavor!!!!!
I haven’t made that salad dressing before. I don’t live anywhere near a Bob’s Big Boy:(
Perfect! I can’t get enough garlic!
