Easy Air Fryer Croutons Recipe – Crispy Homemade in 10 Minutes

By Stephanie Manley Updated 04/21/26

A satisfying crunch on top of your Caesar salad, or floating in a bowl of tomato soup, makes the difference between an ordinary meal and a memorable one. These air fryer croutons turn ordinary sandwich bread into golden, buttery cubes with crisp edges and a tender center. Melted butter and seasoned salt give them the rich, steakhouse-style flavor you cannot get from a bag at the grocery store. Best of all, they are ready in about 10 minutes using bread you already have in your kitchen.

Homemade croutons are one of those small upgrades that quietly improve every salad and soup you serve. The air fryer makes them faster than the oven, more even than the stovetop, and forgiving enough to handle whatever bread is sitting on your counter.

This version uses melted butter instead of olive oil and seasoned salt instead of plain salt. Those two swaps deliver a noticeably richer, more savory crouton with crisp edges and a tender bite in the middle.

You can have a fresh batch on the table in about 10 minutes, no day-old loaf or special trip to the store required.

Why This Recipe Works

Butter coats bread differently from oil. As it heats, the milk solids brown slightly and carry the seasoning into every nook of the cube, producing the deep, savory flavor you taste in restaurant croutons. Olive oil, by comparison, gives a flatter, more neutral result.

Seasoned salt does double duty. It brings salt, paprika, onion, and a touch of sweetness in one ingredient, so the croutons taste fully seasoned without a long spice rack tour. Combined with garlic powder, onion powder, and parsley, you get a layered flavor in a five-ingredient pantry mix.

The air fryer’s circulating heat is what guarantees the texture. It pulls moisture out of all six sides of each cube at once, so you get even browning and a true crunch rather than a crisp shell over a soft middle.

What makes this recipe different

Most air fryer crouton recipes follow the same script: extra virgin olive oil, Italian seasoning, and day-old bread. This recipe takes a different path — one that delivers the rich, crispy crouton you actually want on a Caesar salad or floating in a bowl of tomato soup.

No stale bread required — just 4 slices of regular sandwich bread. You don’t have to plan ahead or keep day-old sourdough on hand. Open the loaf that’s already on your counter, and you’re 10 minutes away from fresh, crispy croutons.

Butter instead of olive oil. While nearly every other air fryer crouton recipe reaches for olive oil, this one uses melted butter for a richer, more indulgent flavor — the kind of crouton you get at Outback or a classic steakhouse, not a drier, more neutral salad topper.

Seasoned salt instead of plain salt. That one swap brings built-in layers of paprika, onion, and a whisper of sweetness to every bite, so the croutons taste fully seasoned without a long spice list.

Recipe ingredients

Here’s a list of what you need:

  • Bread – The foundation of your croutons that provides structure and absorbs flavors; any variety works well (sourdough, whole wheat, white, rye, or day-old bread)
  • Butter – Creates rich flavor and helps achieve golden-brown crispiness; melted butter coats bread evenly
  • Dried parsley – Adds color and herbaceous notes that complement many salads and soups
  • Onion powder – Provides savory depth without the texture of actual onions
  • Seasoned salt – Offers balanced seasoning with hints of paprika and other spices
  • Garlic powder – Adds aromatic garlic flavor that infuses throughout as the croutons cook

How to make croutons

Preparing the Bread

  1. Take 4-5 slices of bread and place them on a cutting board.
  2. Using a serrated knife (preferred to prevent tearing), cut the bread into even, bite-sized cubes, approximately ½-inch to ¾-inch squares.
  3. Set the cubed bread aside while you prepare the seasoning.

Creating the Seasoned Butter

  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 3-4 tablespoons of butter (about 30-45 seconds in the microwave).
  2. Add ½ teaspoon each of dried parsley, onion powder, and garlic powder to the melted butter.
  3. Sprinkle in ¼ teaspoon of seasoned salt.
  4. Whisk all ingredients together until well combined.

Coating the Bread

  1. Add the bread cubes to a large mixing bowl with the seasoned butter.
  2. Gently toss and fold the bread in the butter mixture until all pieces are evenly coated.
  3. Make sure to get the seasoned butter into all the nooks and crannies of the bread.

Air Frying the Croutons

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F if your model requires preheating.
  2. Place the seasoned bread cubes in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Work in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
  3. Cook for 3 minutes, then shake the basket or stir the croutons.
  4. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes until the croutons are golden brown and crispy.
  5. Keep a close eye on them during the last minute, as they can go from perfect to over-browned quickly.

Cooling and Storing

  1. Remove the croutons from the air fryer and spread them on a plate or baking sheet to cool completely.
  2. The croutons will continue to crisp up as they cool to room temperature.
  3. Once cooled, use immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

No air fryer? No problem. Make homemade croutons on your stovetop

While this recipe is designed for an air fryer, you can prepare it in a similar manner by heating a large skillet to medium heat, tossing in the seasoned bread, and cooking it for 5 to 7 minutes.

You will need to stir the bread every 30 seconds or so. The bread will brown. So you can make these on the stovetop.

You can also use crispy air-fryer croutons in recipes like your favorite stuffing or any recipe that calls for bread crumbs, such as your favorite meatloaf.

How to store homemade air fryer croutons

I know you will love these more than store-bought croutons, so you will want to save them. Make sure they are at room temperature, and then store them in an airtight container for up to five days.

Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Croutons

  • Bread choice matters: Denser breads like sourdough create sturdier croutons, while softer breads make lighter, crispier ones
  • Stale bread advantage: Slightly dry bread actually makes better croutons as it absorbs less butter and crisps more evenly
  • Cut size is key: Keep your bread cubes consistent in size for even cooking
  • Don’t overcrowd: Arrange in a single layer with some space between pieces for optimal air circulation
  • Butter vs. oil: Butter provides more flavor, but olive oil or avocado oil work well for dairy-free options
  • Temperature matters: If your croutons are browning too quickly, reduce the temperature to 325°F and extend cooking time slightly
  • Check frequently: Every air fryer model cooks differently, so check often the first time you make these
  • Cool completely: Croutons continue to crisp as they cool, so don’t judge their texture straight from the air fryer

Prepared as written. Simple recipe. Quick to whip up. But they seemed a bit salty. Don’t get me wrong! We still ate them all! Next time I will use garlic powder instead of garlic, salt, and maybe cut back a little on the seasoned salt.

I was looking to use some hot dog buns past their prime and this was perfect! I highly recommend. I used an Italian season dry spice and garlic powder as that’s what I had on hand. I will be making these again!

These croutons are the BEST! I do not like store bought croutons but enjoy them at restaurants where they make them in-house. I am glad to have a recipe this easy so I can have these at home on salads. Also good on soups and just for snacking!
