The family dinner was approaching the critical “what’s our side dish?” moment when I remembered the pantry staple that has saved countless meals in my household. Opening the cabinet, I spotted the familiar box of Lipton Onion Soup Mix and immediately knew what would soon be filling our home with mouthwatering aromas. There’s something almost magical about how this humble packet transforms ordinary potatoes into a dish that consistently receives the highest compliment in my home: an empty serving dish.

Why Lipton Onion Soup Mix the perfect addtion to roasted potatoes
The secret to these incredibly flavorful potatoes is the dehydrated onion soup mix, which contains the perfect blend of onion, salt, and savory elements that infuse the potatoes as they roast.
The vegetable oil helps distribute these flavors evenly while creating a crispy exterior. By roasting at 375-425°F, the potatoes develop a golden crust while maintaining a fluffy interior.
The uniform size of the potato cubes ensures even cooking, and the single-pan preparation means minimal cleanup. This recipe exemplifies how the right shortcut ingredient—in this case, Lipton Onion Soup Mix—can deliver restaurant-quality results with minimal effort.

Ingredients
- Russet potatoes – Provide the perfect starchy foundation that becomes fluffy inside and crispy outside when roasted
- Lipton Onion Soup Mix – The star ingredient that infuses potatoes with complex onion flavor and perfect seasoning
- Vegetable oil – Helps create a crispy exterior while distributing the onion soup mix flavors evenly
- Chopped onion – An addition that enhances the onion flavor with fresh texture and sweetness
- Chopped red bell pepper – An optional ingredient that adds color, sweetness, and nutritional value

How to make easy oven-roasted potatoes
- Preheat oven to 450°F
- Cut the potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Chop the onion and bell pepper, if using them.
- Place the chopped potatoes, onions, and bell peppers in a gallon zip-top bag.
- Add vegetable oil and soup mix to the bag.
- Shake the bag a bit to coat the vegetables.
- Spread the coated vegetables in a baking pan.
- Bake for about 45 minutes. Enjoy!

Storage and Reheating
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheat in a 400-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes to restore crispness. An air fryer also works well for reheating.

I use Weber Roasted Garlic & Herb seasoning and olive oil add salt and pepper to taste works great and easy put them in air fryer about 30 minutes have to shake about have way
Lipton onion soup says 425 for 35 minutes. I’m trying it this way first so the potatoes don’t burn. I think 450 for 40 mini might give me charred pieces.
these are called roasted potatoes. do i use convection roast or bake ??
thanks,
paul
You can cook them in the oven, either with a standard baking process or convection.
Used my own spice mix instead of the Lipton soup (only because I didn’t have Lipton). InTrying you reduce salt intake, it wasn’t “POW” but it was still super delicious
I am going to try to make this for our free community meal at church. I am cooking for about 150 people. The potatoes look delicious. thanks for the recipe
Could you use Or’eida frozen potatoes instead of fresh?
I don’t see why that wouldn’t work.
I would like to subscribe to your website.
These potatoes look great. Can you use sweet potatoes instead?
I think this would work as well.
Sweet potatoes worked well. Boil for approx 30 min, cool, peel, then chop. I added gr pepper .. sauteed with onion and only 1/2 packet of onion soup mix. Since potatoes were now softened, only in oven for 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
Great idea, I will have to give it a try.
This is the same recipe that is on the box of the Lipton soup mix, it’s just that other ingredients were used!!
Thank you for your comment. It is totally based upon that recipe.
Do you add green onion after you bake or before? And how much do you use?
I added it after as a garnish, I added about 1 tablespoon of sliced green onions.
I love roasted potatoes and I will try this, but with my homemade onion soup mix that costs WAY less. My way, for two people? Two medium potatoes, a teaspoon or two of my mix, plus red and yellow sweet peppers and fresh onions.

These are great with nothing but olive oil, garlic salt and rosemary too.. I didn’t add the onion mix at all..
Wow they are so good. Next time i’ll try the onion mix.
I hope you enjoy the potatoes.
Oh my gosh, these look SO crisp and gorgeous and I love the fresh green onions on top. Mmmmm.
Yum! Love making potatoes in different ways.
Thank you for dropping by. I think potatoes can be done in oh so many ways.
I do these all the time at home but I love to give them a sprinkling of rosemary and thyme and kosher salt and pepper. Others also use chicken soup mix.
Oo the chicken soup mix sounds great.
