Orange Fluff Jello Salad

By Stephanie Manley Updated 07/9/26

Every potluck table seems to have one bowl of fluffy, fruity Jello salad, and this orange version is the one people go back for seconds. Orange gelatin combines with cottage cheese, mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple, and whipped cream for a light, fluffy texture with real fruit in every bite. It holds its shape well enough to unmold onto a serving plate, so it looks as good as it tastes. Serve it as a side with ham or smoked meats, or set it out as a light dessert. This is perfect for potlucks or family gatherings.

Orange Fluff is a retro gelatin salad that shows up most often around Easter and in spring, though it works year-round. It is built from orange Jello, mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple, cottage cheese, and whipped cream.

Unlike many fluff salads that rely on Cool Whip, this version uses real whipped heavy cream, which helps it set up firmly enough to hold a mold shape. You can just as easily skip the mold and serve it straight from a bowl.

Why is this the best recipe for orange fluff

One of the best things about this recipe is that it forms the perfect consistency where you can put it in a mold and it will hold its shape. You can dress it up or dress it down, and just put it in a bowl and pop it in the fridge.

Why is this Orange Fluff Jello recipe different?

Whipping the heavy cream to stiff peaks before folding it in is what stabilizes this salad enough to unmold cleanly. Cool Whip or other whipped topping alone doesn’t give the same structure, so heavy cream is the better choice here.

The combination of cottage cheese, mandarin oranges, and crushed pineapple keeps the texture interesting: creamy, fruity, and a little bit chunky, rather than a smooth, uniform gelatin. Because it needs at least 6 hours to set, it is naturally a make-ahead dish, which makes it easy to have ready before a potluck or holiday meal.

Recipe Ingredients

This recipe is super simple with only a few ingredients. Take a look to make sure you have everything you need to make an orange fluff jello salad.

  • Small curd cottage cheese – Adds a creamy, slightly tangy base and helps the salad hold its shape.
  • Orange Jello – Provides the orange flavor and the gelatin that sets the salad.
  • Heavy cream – Whipped to stiff peaks, it lightens the texture and stabilizes the salad for unmolding.
  • Mandarin oranges – Add bursts of fresh citrus flavor throughout.
  • Crushed pineapple – Adds sweetness and a bit of chew alongside the oranges.

Ingredient Notes

  • If you can only find canned pineapple chunks, pulse them in a food processor and strain out the extra juice.
  • Fresh mandarin oranges work too. Peel them thoroughly, remove the pith and seeds, and pulse gently in a food processor to soften them slightly, similar to the canned texture.
  • Use small curd cottage cheese for the smoothest texture. Large curd will still work but creates bigger pockets of cheese throughout the salad.

  2. Transfer the orange fluff mixture into a clean bowl or a jello mold, then refrigerate for at least 6 hours. Overnight is preferred for it to set up properly.
  3. When you are ready to take the fluff out of the mold, place either the bowl or mold in a hot water bath for about 10 seconds. Place a serving plate over the top and flip the orange fluff salad onto it, and remove the mold.

Recipe Variations

If you want to make this orange fluff without cottage cheese, try replacing it with:

  • Orange Fluff with Sour Cream
  • Orange Fluff with Cream Cheese
  • Orange Fluff with Greek Yogurt (plain)

It will not be exactly the same with these substitutions, but they can work.

Here are some tasty add-ins for extra flavor and texture:

  • Mini marshmallows for an extra-sweet touch and a fluffy texture.
  • Chopped maraschino cherries for added flavor and a fun pop of color.
  • Chopped nuts for a little crunch and nutty flavor. Pecans or walnuts pair nicely with orange and pineapple.

Can You Make Orange Jello Fluff Ahead of Time?

Love this stuff and you can make it soooo many different ways depending on what flavor jello you use. I have made it with grape jello and it is fantastic.

I’m wondering if you have any recipes for Ribbon Salad which was popular in the 50’s and 60’s? It must be called something else now because I have tried to do a web search for it but nothing that comes up is what I’m looking for. It’s jello (plain) on the bottom, a layer of whipped cream with mayo and other stuff including cottage cheese or ricotta in the middle (except I don’t think they had access to ricotta in the 50’s but maybe) and then another layer of jello (Lime is my favorite).

If ever you run across such a dessert recipe, I’d appreciate if you’d post it. Thanks!
