What makes the McDonald’s classic apple pie so good?
With this dessert, the crust is exceptionally light and crispy, which provides a delightful contrast to the sweet and chunky apple filling. These mini pies are a gorgeous golden-brown color, giving them an excellent presentation.
If you’re looking for a recipe that satisfies your craving for a classic fried dessert, then this is it. It’s everything you could dream of and more!
Why you should try this recipe
If you’re anything like me, you probably miss sinking your teeth into a fried apple hand pie from McDonald’s. Although their baked apple pies are good, too, they just don’t taste the same as the classic fried ones.
The good news is that you can recreate the original recipe and experience the nostalgia all over again. And the best part? You don’t even have to make the dough from scratch! Simply use puff pastry sheets. It’s that easy!
These mini pies are perfect for parties or on the go because they are individually portioned. Serving them is incredibly convenient – you can wrap them individually or arrange them neatly on a platter. It’s much simpler than slicing a large apple pie on the spot to serve to your guests.
Ingredients
Here’s a list of what you need to make McDonald’s apple pies:
- Granny Smith apple
- Red apple
- Unsalted Butter
- Brown sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground nutmeg
- Allspice
- Vanilla extract
- Lemon juice
- Salt
- Puff pastry sheets
Ingredient notes
This recipe uses 2 medium-sized apples. I like to use two different types of apples. I always pick a Granny Smith apple, and then another type of apple, it could be a Honey Crisp, a Red Delicious, Jazz apple, or any other type your store has available. By using two different types of apples the result will be a more intense apple flavor.
For the package of puff pastry dough, most stores carry the Pepperidge Farm brand, and I find it works very well. For this recipe, you will use the whole package.
How to make McDonald’s fried apple pie
- Defrost the puff pastry according to package directions.
- Dice apples into small pieces and place them in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and salt.
- Cook for 10 to 12 minutes or until the apples are softened.
- Cut puff pastry into 8 squares.
- Spoon apple pie filling onto each one of the squares.
- Brush water on the edges of the pastry squares and fold the squares over on each other.
- Use a fork to crimp and seal the edges together.
- Add enough oil to a heavy pot or deep fryer to be 3 inches deep.
- Heat oil until 350°F.
- Fry pies for about 1 minute on each side. Remove when both sides are golden brown.
- Place pies on a wire rack over a baking sheet to drain excess oil.
- You can keep the pies warm in a 200°F oven until you are ready to serve.
Equipment and cooking tips
You will need to deep fry these pies. For this, I recommend using a Grand Pappy Fryer because it heats consistently and will store so you can reuse the oil.
You can also use a stockpot filled about 3 inches deep with oil.
Resting the pies on a wire rack to drain instead of paper towels will help keep them nice and crisp.
If you want to keep the pies warm while frying them in batches, place them in a warm 200°F oven.
What to serve McDonald’s apple pie with
This warm apple pie is highly delicious with a cold accompaniment, such as homemade vanilla ice cream or your favorite milkshake. The contrasting temperatures create balance and complement each other perfectly.
Another option is to make it fancier by plating it and topping it with homemade whipped cream and caramel sauce. You can also sprinkle a light dusting of powdered sugar on top.
How to store fried apple pies
I definitely recommend eating these the same day you make them. However, if you have leftovers, you can transfer them to an airtight container and store them on the counter for a day or two.
Refrigerating or freezing them will extend their shelf life, but the puff pastry might get slightly soggy due to the condensation in the refrigerator.
How long do they last?
At room temperature, they last for up to 2 days. In the refrigerator, these stay fresh for 4 days, while the freezer can extend their shelf life to approximately 2 months.
What’s the best way to reheat a McDonald’s apple pie?
I suggest reheating these in the oven or air fryer to retain their crunchy outer crust. It doesn’t have to be a super high temperature; 325°F will do! Heat until they’re thoroughly warmed. If you microwave them, they will soften but still taste good, so it is up to you.

Can I make these in an Air Fryer?
Jeanette Jones
Delicious and easier than standard Apple Pies.
MARCI
Can they be frozen before frying?
Stephanie
I would not freeze these before. The puff pastry should not thaw and be re-frozen.
Sasha
Thanks for the memory! I wished they still served these.
Ashleigh
My family really enjoyed these.

We still have the “old school” McDonald’s fried apple pies here in Ireland, they are a long standing favourite. This recipe looks delicious too.

Can u bake tham
stephaniemanley
Yes, you could bake these. I fried these because the old pies were fried not baked 😉 If you bake them they would be a lot like the flakey turn overs you get from a bakery.

Sounds great! How many sheets of puff pastry does this take? Not in ingredients list. Thanks for this old favorite recipe.
