Furr’s Cafeteria Millionaire Pie

There are so many reasons why Furr’s Cafeteria is well known for its extremely popular Furr’s Cafeteria Pineapple Millionaire Pie. This millionaire pie recipe makes a delightful pie that is full of flavor and pleasingly light in texture.

And, what’s more, this is a no-bake millionaire pie that only takes 20 minutes to put together. This recipe was adapted from one in the Fort Star-Telegram.

If you love a rich and creamy pie, this pie is exactly that. It’s sweet and bursting with flavors of the tropics.

We can’t all be millionaires, but this pie is so rich and creamy that it will really make you think you are one. This pie is so delicious that everyone will be asking you for the recipe.

Furr’s cafeteria was first started as a family, cafeteria-style restaurant back in the 1940s. Today, while the delicious food and flavors haven’t changed, the restaurant is more buffet-style. However, if there isn’t a Furr’s near where you live, you can make this wonderful pie at home.

What is Millionaire Pie?

A millionaire pie is a no-bake southern dish that originates from South Carolina. Because this pie was so rich, it gave rise to the name millionaire pie – even if you weren’t wealthy, you felt so when you bit into its richness.

Traditionally, this dessert is made with cream cheese, coconut, Cool Whip, crushed pineapple, chopped pecans, (and optional oranges or lemon juice), all layered on top of a graham cracker crust. Some variations may use condensed milk and heavy cream.

One variation is a Hawaiian million-dollar pie or a billionaire’s pie with added cherry pie filling or maraschino cherries. For any variation, chilling the pie to thicken it and having the whipped topping is essential.

What Makes The Furr’s Cafeteria The Best Millionaire Pie

Furr’s Millionaire pie has the perfect amount of tangy crushed pineapple to balance the velvety, creamy filling. The pecans and pie crust really bring all of the dessert’s flavors together to create a delicious masterpiece!

Although there are many ways to alter millionaire pie, Furr’s pie has classic, traditional flavors and ingredients that can’t be beat!

Why We Love This Recipe

You don’t need to be a professional baker to make this incredible pie! The recipe is so easy to prepare and requires less than 10 ingredients. It’s convenient that you can use a pre-made pie shell!

Also, I love that this pie is a crowd-pleaser, whether you make it for a nice family dinner, a potluck, or during the holidays! It can be your go-to dessert, no matter what time of year it is.

Recipe Notes About the Eggs

This recipe uses raw eggs. If you have any concerns about raw eggs, please use imitation eggs such as eggbeaters, or eggs that have been pasteurized – either work well.

Pasteurized eggs are very safe for people who may have compromised immune systems.

What To Serve With Millionaire Pie

Although the pie is already incredibly indulgent on its own, you can serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of French Vanilla Ice Cream.

If you want something crunchy to offset the soft pie, you can top it with crispy toasted coconut shreds or extra pecans.

Top it with maraschino cherries for a pop of color. Additionally, you can drizzle caramel sauce over it to upgrade its presentation when you plate it.

How To Store Furr’s Pineapple Millionaire Pie

The pie needs to stay in the refrigerator because it contains raw eggs and because leaving it at room temperature will make it soften. This isn’t a big deal since it is best when it is really cold. Leave it in the pie tin and cover it to ensure it stays fresh.

You can also freeze the pie if you wish, but since its texture might be slightly different when thawed, you might want to enjoy it partially frozen. It’s quite yummy as a frozen treat, too.

How Long Will The Pie Last?

As long as you store it correctly in the fridge, this delicious pie remains fresh for 3-4 days. After that, it might start to get watery or separate.

Lubys in NM had a pie I loved. It had crusty meringue, pecans crushed in it, and it was awesome. I do not recall any fruit. I wrote to them years ago and they said they did not share recipes.
Was wondering if anyone remembers it? We also went to Furrs cafeteria a lot after church on Sundays.
    Thanks!!

  2. Zane McFarland

Furrs pie kitchen and Furrs cafeteria had a sour cream, pineapple pie that was NOT the millionaire pie with the powered sugar. I have not had any luck finding any such recipe. Anyone???

  3. Carolyn Keane Franzoni

This was the pie I always asked for as my birthday dessert! My daughter now asks for it for her birthday. It’s also great as tarts or mini tarts. Thank you💕

  4. Ina.

That’s sure not the millionaire pie I had in the 1990’s. I even received the recipe from Furr’s itself, and it was made with beaten eggwhites, sugar, chopped pecans, vanilla, and a sleeve of Saltine crackers mixed together and put in a pie pan. Then baked in 325 F oven for about 30 min. or so.
When completely cold, it was topped w/ real whipped cream, and sprinkled with roasted chopped pecans. It’s still the best millionaire pie around.

Your actually talking about the billionaire pie. This one is the regular millionaire pie. I was just talking about the billionaire pie to my twin tonight… My husband was a manager for 20 years for Furrs cafeteria.

      • Riyah

Does he happen to have any recipes for the brown gray, the Mac and cheese, the fried chicken, the carrot raisin salad, the yellow cake with chocolate frosting or the dinner rolls?? As you can tell my sister and I were HUGE FANS of all of this. We were at FURRS every Sunday as kids. We are so sad we can’t still get our favorites.

    • jenmiles

Hello, that sounds amazimg! What are the ingredient measurements for that Billionaire Pie? I googled Billionaire Pie and could not find any recipes like the pie you described.

I don’t know if the Furr’s in Odessa, TX is still open or not, but the Blueberry Banana pie was my favorite years ago!

    • Tammy M

Pat…We did have two Furrs Cafeterias here in Odessa..One closed about 10+ years ago..It was on the Andrews Hwy..The other one was on Grandview and later moved into the mall where Lubys was..This one closed about 3 years ago..I miss Furrs and Lubys so much!!

  6. Rae Ann Kressin

You wouldn’t know the recipe for a pie at an old Spinnaker’s. It was a cream pie with graham cracker crust. It had nuts, bananas, coconut, pineapple. I’ve forgotten the name but is love a recipe for it!

They closed our Furr’s in Corpus Christi, lost their lease, which I doubt happened. They say they will re-open in two to three years. This I have to see. No one will respond to my emails about what happened. I noticed they closed the Victoria texas location. They must no like us in South Texas.

Just today, I was going through my mother’s handwritten recipe cards and came across this recipe. I grew up in West TX (Lubbock) and Furr’s restaurants, cafeterias and markets (later supermarkets) filled my life on a near daily basis. This recipe is close to the original Furr’s Millionaire Pie recipe, but it is not the original. My Grandmother was the Pastry Chef for Furr’s and is responsible for introducing this recipe. Family legend reveals her to be the creator of Furr’s Millionaire Pie and subsequently, all of its knock-offs. She also purchased the Waldorf Astoria Red Cake from its source and introduced it to the Southwest. I’d tell you the difference between my Grandmother’s recipe and this one, but I’m still weighing the worth of going forward with crafting a book based on my inheritance of a small wooden “Gold Medal Flour Home Services Recipes” box.

    • Stephanie

I would definitely consider making the recipes public. Books or even simply placing the content online for others is a great way to share memories from the past.

i would buy such a book. I’m so tired of curated/modified politically correct don’t-use-gluten/wheat/whatever recipes. Give me something original!

  10. Teach142

I tried this recipe doing the 2 pies as suggested. I found two pies to lack filling. So, I’ve tried the recipe using the filling in only 1 pie and it seems to work much better!

The Furr’s here in Texas are starting close, what a shame. This looks like a great recipe. Anything like the taste of a Pineapple Upside Down cake?
