In college, study sessions often felt endless, especially during finals week. My friend Russ Stevens insisted we take a much-needed break at the local Sonic Drive-In between classes and marathon study sessions at the library. “You have to try the Cherry Limeade,” he told me as we pulled into one of the parking spots. Skeptical but curious, I ordered one, expecting just another soft drink.
That first sip was a revelation. The perfect balance of tangy lime, sweet cherry, and fizzy soda created an instantly refreshing flavor that woke up my tired brain. From that day forward, Cherry Limeade became our official study break tradition. Whenever the textbooks became too overwhelming, one of us would inevitably suggest, “Sonic break?” and we’d pile into whoever’s car was working that week.

Why This Recipe Works
This copycat Sonic Cherry Limeade recipe succeeds by honoring the perfect balance of flavors found in the original. Combining tart fresh lime juice and sweet cherry syrup creates that signature sweet-sour profile that is immediately recognizable to Sonic fans. Sprite as the base provides both the carbonation and additional sweetness that rounds out the flavor while also contributing the essential lemon-lime undertones that complement both the cherry and lime. Just three ingredients mirror Sonic’s straightforward preparation method, ensuring an authentic taste with minimal effort. Fresh lime juice is crucial here; bottled lime juice lacks the bright, zesty quality that makes this drink so refreshing and distinctive.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Sprite – Provides the carbonated lemon-lime base essential to the drink
- Cherry syrup – Delivers the signature sweet cherry flavor
- Fresh lime – Contributes essential tangy brightness and aroma
For the cherry juice, you have a couple of options. You can purchase a jar of Maraschino cherries and use some juice. Or you can buy a juice bottle like The Royal Cherry Maraschino Syrup.
How to Make Cherry Limeade
- Pour the cherry syrup into a tall glass.
- Add the juice from the lime.
- Add Sprite.
- Add ice.
- Garnish with a cherry or lime wedge if desired.
This refreshing beverage has to be one of the most popular at Sonic Drive-In. Everyone loves cherry limeade.

Does anyone have a sonic hotdog sauce?
Do they even still make slice?????? I haven’t seen it in NJ in a LLLOOONNNGGG time.
I worked at the local Sonic Drive-In in Southeast TN. We actually used Sprite instead of Pepsi products because our district was contracted for Coca-Cola products. For a medium sized Cherry Limeade (20 oz.) follow this recipe:
1- 1 1/2 cup(s) ice
2 tbsp of cherry syrup (sno cone syrup works fine)
1/4 of 1 lime; squeezed, and the entire contents placed inside glass/cup (yes, even the lime)
1 marachino cherry
fill the rest of the glass/cup with Sprite
For a “cherry-er” taste, add more cherry syrup and for a “lime-ier” taste, add more lime. We had customers that liked more or less of either of the two main ingredients. Just play around with the ingredients to suit your personal taste.
Also, Sonic had a sugar-free version which utilized sugar-free cherry syrup; which can be found in the sno cone syrup section at any Wal-Mart, and Diet Sprite.
Thank you.
