Why this copycat Olive Garden Stuffed Mushrooms recipe works
This recipe for stuffed mushrooms works because it has a lot more flavor than your everyday stuffed mushroom. The addition of different cheeses and the taste of clams really adds a lot of unique flavor to this much-loved appetizer.
Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make clam-stuffed mushrooms:
- Mushrooms – The perfect vessel for the savory clam and cheese filling
- Clams – Add a briny, seafood flavor that complements the herbs and garlic
- Green onion – Provides a mild, fresh onion taste that doesn’t overpower the other ingredients
- Egg – Helps bind the filling ingredients together
- Fresh garlic – Infuses the filling with a robust, aromatic flavor
- Garlic salt – Enhances the overall taste and adds a touch of saltiness
- Italian bread crumbs – Creates a crispy texture and helps hold the filling together
- Oregano leaves – Contribute a slightly bitter, earthy, and aromatic flavor
- Butter – Adds richness and helps keep the mushrooms moist during baking
- Parmesan cheese – Offers a nutty, salty, and umami flavor to the filling
- Romano cheese – Provides a sharp, tangy, and slightly salty taste
- Mozzarella cheese – Melts beautifully and creates a gooey, stretchy topping

What Kinds of Mushrooms are Best for Stuffing?
When making appetizer-sized stuffed mushrooms, large white button mushrooms or cremini mushrooms are most commonly used. If you want larger stuffed mushrooms, you can use portobello mushrooms.
When buying mushrooms, look for firm, plump ones, as this indicates freshness.
Mushrooms need to be cleaned thoroughly before stuffing. A soft brush or a dishcloth can be used to remove dirt from the mushroom cap. Once cleaned, mushrooms should be rinsed under cold water and allowed to dry before being stuffed.
- Fresh mushrooms can be stored in a plastic bag in your refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- Purchase mushrooms without blemishes, as they will last longer if you aren’t going to cook with them on the first day.
How to Make Olive Garden Stuffed Mushrooms

Mysel I would never advise anyone to keep any mushrooms in a darn plastic bag. I raised several varieties of mushrooms & when purchasing. Go for the store-bought carmines. Always either a paper bag or any good breathable container-never a plastic bag or for me if paper isn’t provided at the veggie part of store where variety of mushrooms are, I never even purchas & take home to store my way.
These are so good we have them for dinner at my house.
I liked the recipe, but in my opinion, it did not taste exactly like Olive Garden mushrooms because of too much breadcrumbs. They weren’t just as juicy. Olive Garden mushrooms have way less breadcrumbs. I only put 3 table spoons instead of half a cup, and it was too much!
Thank you, I will keep your comments in mind!
Absolutely delicious. Always been a fan of the Olive Garden stuffed mushrooms until they recently changed the recipe and in my opinion are horrible. This recipe definitely reminds me of the original delicious version!
These were done from the original recipe 😉 So sorry to hear that they changed their recipe.
Do you have a recipe for stuffed crabs
I didn’t know they had stuffed crabs.
Pls maybe change recipe ingredients list to clams drained (save clam juice for recipe)?!
It does say a 6 oz can of clams, so assuming juice drained from that can. This juice is added with the egg and breadcrumbs as listed in directions. I made these several times and they are great. I didn’t change a thing ??
So glad you liked the recipe.
These weren’t bad 😉 We enjoyed them.
I could only find 10 ounce cans of clams. I doubled the recipe and included the stems, chopped finely, in the stuffing. My wife raved about them, so it was a success.
Can I prepare these the night before?
This should work ok.
If you use clams a and fresh crab meat do you need something else to moisten ?
I’m not big on clams or anything else in the seafood line. I do like salmon. Could the salmon be used in place of the clams?
Fantastic flavor and easy to make
I made a double batch. 10 with clams and 10 with crawfish meat. With the crawfish I used seafood stock for the clam juice, Old Bay for the oregano and regular bread crumbs for the Italian style. Could not tell you which disappeared first because I didn’t get any by the time I got outside to join in!
Oh I bet that was delicious! It’s too bad you didn’t get any of them!
Do you gave the crab meat stuffing for mushrooms. Mountain Jack’s resraurant

These were outstanding! Delicious and easy too.
I am glad you enjoyed these!
This is a winner in my family
Thank you!

You can use “imitation crab” finely chopped too! It’s amazing.. ty!!
I made these stuffed mushrooms for my parents 50th anniversary party! They disappeared so fast! I think I found the majority of the appetizers for their party on this site! Our food was so good it was gone so fast!
I am so glad these worked out for you.
which amount of butter do over the mushrooms last the 1/4c amount or the 1 tbsp
You use the melted butter at the end, and the softened butter to mix with.
The tablespoon at the end.
Make it truffle butter for next level yum
